Between July 1976 and July 1977, Berkowitz shot 13 people, killing six. His victims were often young people sitting in or near parked cars, and he attacked without an obvious personal connection to them. That randomness terrified New Yorkers.

The killer became known as “Son of Sam” because he claimed that a neighbor’s dog, possessed by a demon named Sam, had ordered him to kill. He also sent bizarre letters to police and newspapers, taunting investigators and turning the case into a media circus.

The break came after a shooting in Brooklyn on July 31, 1977. Police discovered that the killer’s car had received a parking ticket near the scene. Investigators traced the vehicle to Berkowitz.

Police went to his Yonkers apartment. Berkowitz was arrested as he emerged from the building, carrying a .44-caliber revolver.

Now introduce Berkowitz properly.

The irony is fantastic:

“This guy parked badly.”

That gives you a fun opportunity to contrast cinematic detective work with the boring administrative details that can actually solve crimes.

7. The Arrest: And Then There Was Just... David?

Police arrested Berkowitz outside his Yonkers apartment on July 31.

According to accounts of the arrest, he was found with a .44-caliber revolver and reportedly did not put up a significant struggle.

And this creates an important psychological whiplash for the audience.

For months, New Yorkers had imagined Son of Sam as this almost mythological monster.

Then police caught him.

He wasn’t a demon.

He was spectacularly wrong about the size of the Earth, accidentally stumbled onto continents unknown to Europeans, and set in motion one of history’s most consequential and most contested departures. Brilliant navigator, ambitious opportunist, or deeply controversial figure: the debate over how to remember Columbus is still very much alive.

At 2:47 a.m. on August 3, his father, a local notary public, administered the presidential oath by the light of a kerosene lamp, one of the most unusual inaugurations in American history.

On August 3, 1936, a wildfire outran a train packed with residents fleeing the Russian village of Kursha-2, trapping them as the fire overtook the tracks. More than a thousand people died, making it one of the deadliest wildfires ever recorded.

As we break through the summer months, we start again with an audio only show. Personnally, I am tired of watching mouths flopping around. Take us on your commute, while you scrub the dishes, or as you watch the world burn from your lawn chair.

1. Charles & Diana’s Royal Wedding (1981)
Nearly a billion people tuned in to watch a 32-year-old prince marry a 20-year-old kindergarten aide in a dress with a 25-foot train, and somehow nobody in Buckingham Palace stopped to ask “should we maybe not do this.” It was the biggest fairy tale broadcast in television history, right up until it turned into the most expensive divorce in tabloid history. Buckle up for the wedding that launched a thousand commemorative plates and at least one Netflix series.

2. “The Fellowship of the Ring” Published (1954)
An Oxford professor with a pipe addiction and a deep grudge against industrialization unleashed a 400-page hobbit-walking-simulator on the British public and accidentally created the entire fantasy genre as we know it. No Tolkien, no Game of Thrones, no D&D, no forty-minute YouTube videos explaining elf genealogy. We’re talking about the book that turned “worldbuilding” into a personality trait.

3. Carl Lewis Wins His Fourth Straight Long Jump Gold (1996)
Twelve years. Four Olympics. Same event, same gold medal, same guy, basically defying the passage of time like some kind of track and field vampire. We’re diving into the career of a man who made “one more Olympics” sound less like a comeback and more like a threat to everyone else in the field.

4. USS Forrestal Fire (1967)
An accidentally launched rocket on a Navy carrier off Vietnam triggered a chain-reaction fire that killed 134 sailors in under an hour including a near-miss for a young pilot named John McCain, who was sitting in the jet right next to the explosion. It’s one of the deadliest peacetime-adjacent disasters in Navy history, and it’s got everything: bureaucratic failure, sheer bad luck, and a body count that changed naval safety protocol forever.

5. King Umberto I of Italy Assassinated (1900)
An Italian king gets shot by an anarchist with a grudge and a plan but the genuinely unhinged part is the eerie backstory involving a restaurant owner, a look-alike, and a series of coincidences so bizarre that even people who don’t believe in fate started raising an eyebrow. This one’s less “history lecture” and more “true crime episode that happens to have a monarchy in it.”

6. The Arc de Triomphe’s Secret Opening (1836)
Picture the biggest, gaudiest monument in Paris the kind of thing built specifically to make a statement quietly cracking open its doors to a grand total of eleven people because the king was too scared of getting assassinated to show up to his own party. It’s the world’s most anticlimactic ribbon-cutting, and we are absolutely here for the second-hand embarrassment.

7. NASA is Established (1958)
The Soviets launched a beach-ball-sized satellite into orbit and the entire United States collectively panicked hard enough to create a federal agency in response. That’s the origin story of NASA less “grand vision for humanity’s future among the stars” and more “we got embarrassed at the international science fair and now there’s a budget for it.”

8. The Spanish Armada is First Sighted (1588)
A king with main character energy sent 130 ships to invade England, and it all kicked off the moment English lookouts spotted the fleet off the Cornish coast. What follows is fireships, storms, and one of history’s great “it seemed like a good idea at the time” military disasters. Spoiler: England’s still there.

9. The IAEA is Established (1957)
In the middle of a Cold War arms race where every country was racing to build bigger and scarier bombs, the world collectively decided someone should probably keep an eye on all this nuclear material. Enter the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear hall monitor, born from equal parts optimism and existential dread.

10. US Congress Apologizes for Slavery (2008)
143 years after the 13th Amendment, the House of Representatives formally said sorry for slavery and Jim Crow no reparations attached, no legal weight, just words. It’s a genuinely fascinating one to dig into: what does an apology like this actually do, who was satisfied by it, and who called it exactly what it was a symbolic gesture with an asterisk the size of Texas.

Before we begin, a quick note. Convos With Ma had our Meta account hacked. This resulted in funds being removed from our CWM account on behalf of what Meta called, “An Intruder.” Both Meta and our bank Chime have apologized for the unfortunate incident. However, it is possible we hacked our account, so, the funds are irretrievable. “This matter is now final.”

That pissed me off quite a bit. On principle, we will no longer do business with either company, which includes Facebook and Instagram. Because my 87 year old ma loves the Facebook, I will not kill the page. I want to kill it. I have fantasized placing my fingers around the throats of The Face and The Gram, but I will not. The accounts will live there dormant for all of eternity, or until someone unplugs those bastards… Bastards.

I took a week off from looking at any of this because I was mad at it. But anyway. This is a couple of weeks old, but it does highlight 87 year old Bertie May in an energetic light. Which was the point, I think.

1. Hey Fido! What do you think of Cassavetes?

Ma and I discuss the Chinese startup that has Up’d your dog. You know, the collar that translates his loves, hates, and future dreams into audible expression.

They claim to have a 95 percent success rate. Word? Well, I don’t need a talking collar to inform me your dog thinks my leg is a chew toy.

They have cat collars too, but no one really wants to hear a cat ask their human over and over if they are ready to die yet. I already know that on the day of my inevitable coronary event, Mr. Whiskers is going to pop my eye into it’s mouth.

2. Listen, Gerfried. People are no longer looking at the art!

Ma seems to hate a chesty lady.

This pops again as we discuss a free admission to a Cezanne exhibition in Basel, Switzerland. However, not everyone gets in for free. Only the ones that show up in swimwear.

Swimwear does have a wide interpretation. I’m sure some were appropriate for art consumption. Yet, I can’t imagine that everyone was only looking at art. There must have been a blue eyed Swiss lady with an Italian surname that was, umm, enjoying being part of the exhibit.

Her roploplos are ruining the exhibit. Kiste!

3. Now, juggle it with your chin, Dummy!

This guy must have a massive chin, according to Ma.

Why does Guinness entertain these Darwin mocking yahoos? Here is a guy who shows up at his sons soccer match with a chainsaw, a chin, and a goal.

And then he sets a world record. Cool…

Cool! This has been a test. We think this might be a better presentation than the labor intensive shorts and reels that do get a lot of views, but do not translate into any real relationships. It’s not dissimilar to walking around a Costco eating all the samples. Sure, I’d love to try a shrimp flavored sugar cookie, but I’m not going to buy a case of them.

Frankly, I have no idea how to find more people to listen to my Ma and I. This feels like and old school blog, which I like to make. I don’t particularly like hanging out on IG or FB or YT or LI or FU or DD. I think those are mostly the places, but I can’t remember.

I will keep this one short and sweet. It’s been about twelve hours since we rebranded, and I am ready to go outside and ignore both conversations AND my Ma. Everything was changed. From Facebook pages to Ko-Fi accounts to Substack themes. Everything. ANYWAY…

If you are unaware, this endeavor is an effort to keep my 87 year old mother’s mind as strong as a wild bear, which she might have been in a different life. However, she did complain that on the news show, on occasion, she sounded like, “…a dumb, old lady. An idiot. So stupid!” I get it, Ma. That’s not what I want. So we pivot.

I told Ma that she didn’t need to stress out over these recordings anymore. She could speak freely without worrying that her bingo friends might disown her if we selectively picked out the best exchange. If she sounded confused or inarticulate, I’ll cut it. No problem. Don’t worry ‘bout it. I got you, Ma.

We picked out three topics, talked about each for about ten minutes, and then I chose this one. The other two were Margaret Thatcher thatching around and the Tijuana poop water that was making it’s way up the coast for a vacation in, on, and around Imperial beach. But boobs and their support won in the end. Boobs always win in the end.

However, Canva has a limit of ten minutes for the video editor. I did not know that. I thought we would truncate the show to allow for the time it would take for editing, but what are you going to do? I’m kind of relieved. I like the audio-only aspect with the fun clips flung around the internet. Playing with the Canva editor has lit a curious fire to learning how to actually edit video, but I won’t shoehorn that into this endeavor.

Back to 10 stories for episode 10.

On this one, we talk about a cat that likes the smell of a Georgia living room (?!), a streamer’s straw insert, a cow that can reach the hard places, a gross robot that can pick boogers, and the actual meaning of being 86’d.

Ma didn’t like her performance, unfortunately. After listening, she said, “I sound like an old lady!” Well, you are, Ma, but that’s ok! I still think she is worried about who is listening vs. what is coming out of her mouth. She’ll let her guard down eventually. When there is no tape rolling, that’s a loud lady.

To be fair, if she is critical about her performance, that indicates she wants to improve. Excellent! She even asked if we could do a second take. Unfortunately, I have already edited and uploaded the pod. It’s fine. You get a new swing in three days, Ma! It’s all good.
